The Boston Modern Orchestra Project has released Leon Kirchner: Music for Orchestra, Chen Yi’s Concertos for String Instruments and Charles Fussell’s Cymbeline on its own BMOP/sound label, led by Artistic Director Gil Rose. The Kirchner recording features five of the composer’s works, among them Sinfonia in Two Parts, Orchestra Piece (Music for Orchestra II), and The Forbidden. The string quartet Brooklyn Rider is featured on Dreamers, a new album with jazz singer Magos Hererra featuring Ibero-American classics in new arrangements by Jaques Morelenbaum, Gonzalo Grau, Diego Schissi, Guillermo Klein, and Colin Jacobsen. The Fort Wayne Philharmonic has released its first commercial recording, a live March 2018 performance led by Music Director Andrew Constantine of three works by Walter Bricht (1904-1970), on the Toccata Classics label. Bob Watt, who played French Horn in the Los Angeles Philharmonic from 1970 to 2008, has released his first solo album, “I Play French Horn,” with pianist and composer Todd Cochran, featuring original compositions and arrangements of music by Bach, Ravel, and Dave Brubeck, as well as hymns and spirituals. The Nashville Symphony Chorus and Orchestra are featured on a new Naxos recording of John Harbison’s Requiem, conducted by Music Director Giancarlo Guerrero, recorded live in May 2017 at Schermerhorn Symphony Center. Carlos Kalmar leads the Oregon Symphony in Aspects of America, a newly released Pentatone recording featuring Barber’s Souvenirs for Orchestra, Sean Shepherd’s Magiya, Sebastian Currier’s Microsymph, Christopher Rouse’s Supplica, and Kenji Bunch’s Aspects of an Elephant. The Oregon Symphony has also recorded its free August 31 performance of Gabriel Kahane’s 50-minute oratorio emergency shelter intake form for future release. The Kahane work, a co-commission, is about poverty and economic inequality, and was premiered by the orchestra in May 2018. Pianist Daniil Trifonov and the Philadelphia Orchestra are featured on Rachmaninov Variations, a new Deutsche Grammophon recording, led by Music Director Yannick Nezet-Seguin. California’s Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and Chorale has released a recording of its live April 2017 performance of the 1745 version of Rameau’s opera Le Temple de la Gloire, on its own label. Montana’s Tippet Rise Arts Center has released Daydreams, featuring performances from the Tippet Rise chamber music festival’s second season in 2017, on the Pentatone label.
Outside the U.S., JoAnn Falletta’s first recording with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, Franz Schreker—The Birth of the Infanta Suite, Prelude to a Drama, and Romantic Suite, has been released by Naxos. The London Symphony Orchestra has released Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 8 as a digital download on its LSO Live label, led by Principal Guest Conductor Gianandrea Noseda. Also out from the London Symphony Orchestra, on Deutsche Grammophon, is Hommage à Penderecki, a double album of the composer’s works featuring the orchestra with violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, pianist Lambert Orkis, and double bassist Roman Patkoló. Penderecki will turn 85 on November 23. Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra has released The Bounds of Our Dreams, its fourth recording led by Music Director Alexander Shelley. On the Analekta label, the album features Concerto de l’asile, a piano concerto by Canadian composer Walter Boudreau, with soloist Alain Lefèvre; Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade; and Ravel’s Pavane. Russia’s Siberian State Symphony Orchestra has recorded Mieczyslaw Weinberg’s Symphony No. 13/Serenade for Orchestra, led by Vladimir Lande, on the Naxos label.
