The Steans Music Institute at Ravinia, the annual music festival in Highland Park north of Chicago, is seeking new scores that fuse jazz and classical music by composers ages 18 to 30 for its “Bridges” competition. Pieces submitted must be composed for string quartet (two violins, viola, and cello) and jazz rhythm section (piano, bass, and drums); an additional instrumental melodic part may be included but is not required. Up to three winners will be selected, and each winner will be awarded a prize of $2,500. Submissions will be judged by pianist Billy Childs and bassist Rufus Reid, directors of the Ravinia Steans Music Institute Program for Jazz. Winning compositions will be given their world premieres in Ravinia’s Bennett Gordon Hall on June 7. The application deadline is February 1, 2019, and winners will be notified on or around March 1, 2019. Visit https://www.ravinia.org/Page/Bridges-Competition for complete information.
