“When DePaul University’s School of Music unveils its $98 million Holtschneider Performance Center … on Thursday, the school’s students and faculty won’t be the only beneficiaries,” writes Howard Reich in Tuesday’s (10/30) Chicago Tribune. “Chicagoans will be able to partake of a spacious new musical nexus encompassing four performance halls…. The music-making launches with Unveiled, an 11-day festival of classical music and jazz offering a taste of what lies ahead, with performances by violinist Itzhak Perlman, soprano Ana Maria Martinez, percussionist Evelyn Glennie, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, trumpeter Nicholas Payton and others…. The Mary Patricia Gannon Concert Hall, at 505 seats the largest of the listening rooms…. The 140-seat Murray and Michele Allen Recital Hall [has] towering windows and two-story height…. Still smaller [are] the 80-seat Brennan Family Recital Hall [and] the 75-seat Mary A. Dempsey and Philip H. Corboy Jazz Hall…. For students [there are] 80 practice rooms, rehearsal spaces of various sizes for instrumental and vocal ensembles, a high-tech recording studio, classrooms, outsized lockers (to store musical instruments) and so on…. Construction [will] begin later this year on renovation of the school’s Concert Hall.”
