A memorial concert for Charles Hamlen, an influential figure in the classical music field who co-founded a leading classical talent management agency, will be held at the New York Ethical Culture Society on Wednesday, November 7. Hamlen died on August 1 at the age of 75. With Edna Landau, Hamlen cofounded the talent agency that grew into industry powerhouse IMG Artists, which represented many of classical music’s biggest stars. Starting in 1993, Hamlen left IMG to focus on raising money to assist people living with AIDS, and founded Classical Action: Performing Arts Against AIDS, a charity that raised millions for AIDS groups. He remained active in the classical music field, and in recent years served as artistic adviser to the Orchestra of St. Luke’s in New York City. Paying tribute to Hamlen at the November 7 memorial concert will be Emanuel Ax, Rob Fisher, Renée Fleming, Fred Hersch, Stephen Hough, Hsin-Yun Huang, Leila Josefowicz, Pedja Muzijevic, John Novacek, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Natasha Paremski, and David Hyde Pierce.
