On November 10 and 12, the Chicago Sinfonietta will perform “Sea of Light: Reflections on Diwali” concerts, juxtaposing Indian classical music alongside Debussy’s impressionistic La Mer. Music Director Mei-Ann Chen will lead a program featuring sitarist Gaurav Mazumdar (in photo), who will perform in his own Celebration, a series of Indian ragas. Also on the program will be Reena Esmail’s Teen Murti, Eric Whitacre’s Lux Aurumque, and Debussy’s La Mer. Before each performance and during intermission, the orchestra will provide samplings of food, dance, and art of India, and audience members can help create a Rangoli, a floor mosaic made from materials such as rice, flour, sand, or flower petals. India’s Diwali “festival of lights” holiday takes place this year from November 5 to 9. The Chicago Sinfonietta performs at Chicago’s Symphony Center and at Wentz Hall in Naperville, Illinois.
