“It’s been nearly two years since the devastating Dec. 2, 2016, Ghost Ship fire that took the lives of 36 individuals in an Oakland warehouse-turned-artist space,” writes Georgia Rowe in Monday’s (11/12) Mercury News (Calif.). “Under music director Michael Morgan, the Oakland Symphony marks the memory of those who perished with a newly commissioned concerto. The Friday concert features ‘Ghost Ship Concerto’ for Cello and Orchestra by composer Richard Marriott, founder and artistic director of the Club Foot Orchestra; cellist Matthew Linaman, the winner of the Oakland Symphony’s 2014 Young Artist Competition, is the work’s soloist. The program pairs Marriott’s concerto with another work of remembrance, Brahms’ beautiful ‘German’ Requiem, featuring the Oakland Symphony Chorus with soprano Patricia Westley, baritone Robert Sims and members of the Oakland Gay Men’s Chorus. Completing the program is Leonard Bernstein’s ‘Take Care of This House,’ from the composer’s ‘1600 Pennsylvania Avenue,’ with Westley joining Morgan and the orchestra.”
