California’s Ojai Music Festival has announced details of its next season from June 6 to 9, 2019, programmed by soprano/conductor Barbara Hannigan, this season’s music director, together with Artistic Director Thomas W. Morris. Hannigan will conduct a semistaged version of Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress directed and designed by Linus Fellbom and featuring members of Hannigan’s Equilibrium (EQ) mentoring initiative for young professional artists. Among other works she will conduct are Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht and Stravinsky’s ballet Pulcinella. Hannigan will be featured as soprano in Gérard Grisey’s Quatre chants pour franchir le seuil; Schoenberg’s String Quartet No. 2 for soprano and string quartet; John Zorn’s Jumalattaret; and Girl Crazy Suite, an arrangement of Gershwin songs by Bill Elliott. Other featured composers at Ojai in 2019 will include Claude Vivier, James Dillon, Catherine Lamb, Terry Riley, Marc Sasbat, Tyshawn Sorey, and Mark-Anthony Turnage. There will be a free concert of John Luther Adams’s The Mathematics of Resonant Bodies performed by percussionist Steven Schick in the Libbey Park Gazebo, and a concert in memory of Oliver Knussen, the festival’s 2005 music director.
