“Arna Einarsdóttir will become the new managing director of the National Arts Centre Orchestra in the spring,” writes Megan Gillis in Monday’s (12/3) Ottawa Citizen (Canada). “Einarsdóttir, managing director of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, will take up the post in the spring of 2019. The job became vacant in June, when Christopher Deacon, the orchestra’s managing director for 22 years, took over as the NAC’s president and chief executive…. Einarsdóttir will form an ‘outstanding partnership’ with musical director Alexander Shelley, Deacon said. In five years as managing director in Iceland, Einarsdóttir led a ‘turnaround’ that saw the orchestra debt-free, posting surpluses, recruiting world-renowned conductors and performing 100 times a year with tours of Japan, the U.K. and Germany…. She started her career with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra in 2000 as second flute…. Einarsdóttir said she was ‘honoured and excited’ to take on the role…. The orchestra, formed in 1969, gives about 100 performances a year in Ottawa, across Canada and on tour around the world. In May 2019, it embarks on a seven-city tour of the U.K., France, the Netherlands, Sweden and Denmark to mark the National Arts Centre’s 50th anniversary.”
