The Peoples’ Symphony Concerts series in New York City, which presents affordably priced concerts featuring soloists and chamber ensembles at Washington Irving High School and Town Hall, will feature eighteen concerts in 2018-19. Artists performing in the series this season include pianists Jonathan Biss, Paul Lewis, and Peter Serkin; the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio; the Juilliard, Danel and Dover string quartets; the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center; clarinetist Richard Stoltzman, pianist David Deveau, and soprano Sara Shafer; and the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet. The season opened on October 13 with a performance by Russian Renaissance, an ensemble that performs on the traditional Russian folk instruments balalaika, domra, and accordion; the season will conclude on May 4 with a recital by pianist Richard Goode. The Peoples’ Symphony Concerts were founded in 1900 by Franz X. Arens to provide immigrants on the city’s Lower East Side with the chance to hear affordable concerts—five cents per ticket at the time. Originally an orchestral music series, the series today charges $8 per ticket and focuses on established and emerging artists and chamber ensembles.
