“Katherine Johnson has left her post as VP of Communications for the New York Philharmonic,” reports Nicholas Beard in Monday’s (12/17) Musical America (subscription required). “She is moving to North Carolina to join the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) in a new position, director of media relations and communications. Johnson started with the Philharmonic almost 11 years ago as associate director of PR, and has worked her way up the ladder. Days within her arrival, she was whisked off to join the orchestra on its historic tour to Pyongyang, North Korea, and Hanoi, Vietnam. Johnson’s husband is on the drama faculty of the school; apparently (and understandably) they have tired of commuting. Prior to the New York Philharmonic, Johnson held positions in PR at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Shuman Associates, Burson Marsteller, and Ruder Finn. She holds a BA from the University of Virginia. At UNC, she will oversee two staffers, including the managers of media relations and communications.”
