“Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla’s much-anticipated New York Philharmonic debut, scheduled for concerts January 3-5, has been postponed, ‘due to maternity/family leave following the birth of her first child,’ according to the orchestra,” writes Susan Elliott in Thursday’s (12/20) Musical America (subscription required). “Paavo Järvi will replace her and the program remains the same: Dvořák’s Cello Concerto, with Gautier Capuçon as soloist; Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé Suite No. 2; and Sibelius’s Lemminkainen and the Maidens of the Island. Gražinytė-Tyla had her first child at the end of August, and was back on the podium last month in the U.K. The 32-year-old Lithuanian conductor, music director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, was also due to make her San Francisco Symphony debut in January. That was cancelled as well, but the orchestra announced the news in October. The Philharmonic … announced her decision today.”
