Three Springfield Symphony Orchestra musicians—Principal Percussionist Nathan Lassell, substitute percussionist Doug Perry, and Principal Timpanist Martin Kluger—“pool their talents on Sunday afternoon, Jan.13, to present a chamber music concert dedicated to music for the percussion family of musical instruments,” writes Clifton Noble Jr. in Wednesday’s (1/2) Republican (Springfield, MA). “The program for Sunday’s concert … includes Glen Prior’s Piece for Three Pair of Hands Clapping, Eckhard Kopetzki’s Canned Heat, excerpts from Eugene Novotney’s Intentions, and Nebojsa Jovan Zivkovic’s Trio per Uno, and the fugue from Bach’s Violin Sonata in G minor, transcribed by Perry for marimba…. Also included is an original composition by Kluger, General Percussion, written in tribute to his father. ‘When I was growing up,’ Kluger said, ‘(my father and I) formed a sort of percussion dynamic duo, playing together side by side in various Long Island amateur or professional bands and orchestras.’ … ‘By implementing these chamber concerts,’ Kluger said, ‘Music Director Kevin Rhodes has invited the SSO musicians to a giant artistic leap in terms of independently programming, rehearsing and performing.
