“Peter Rubino, Tyler Germond and two other friends drove 14 hours to get to this year’s NHL Winter Classic,” writes Becky Malewitz in Wednesday’s (1/2) South Bend Tribune (IN). “The group from Walton, Mass., sported their Boston Bruins jerseys as they spent Tuesday morning tailgating in the parking lot outside Notre Dame Stadium before the start of the event…. With a sellout crowd of 76,126, those in attendance Tuesday were able to see how the NHL combined with Notre Dame to create the outdoor event, which has been held at various locations since 2008…. This year’s event featured the South Bend Symphony Orchestra playing the Notre Dame Fight Song as the Leprechaun and Notre Dame hockey team led both teams to the rink. The St. Joseph High School varsity and junior varsity hockey teams held the United States flag on the auxiliary rink as the symphony performed the National Anthem…. During the first intermission, Grammy Award-winning band Weezer performed a trio of tunes, including a cover of Toto’s ‘Africa,’ their new release, ‘Can’t Knock the Hustle,’ and ‘Say it Ain’t So’ from their 1994 debut album. Nashville-based Judah & the Lion performed three songs during the second intermission.”
