“WQXR is kicking off 2019 by introducing ‘19 for 19,’ a group of artists we love that includes long-time heroes, established favorites, and newcomers set for stardom,” reads an unsigned Monday (1/7) article at New York classical radio station WQXR. Musicians in the article include “triple-threat Teddy Abrams … this gifted musician has transformed the classical scene in Louisville, Kentucky, where he is music director of the Louisville Orchestra.” Abrams “also runs the Britt Festival in Jacksonville, Oregon [and] also plays clarinet and leads the genre-blending Sixth Floor Trio.” Others are the JACK Quartet (“new music and living composers have become a central part of the group’s musical identity”); The Knights (“although the ensemble defies easy categorization, it might best be described as a ‘collective that wants its performances to be as culturally relevant as they are technically sound’ ”); pianists Inon Barnatan, Wei Luo, and Beatrice Rana; violinists Nicola Benedetti, Anne Akiko Meyers, and Elena Urioste; harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani; bassist Xavier Foley; saxophonist Jess Gillam; cellists Steven Isserlis and Sheku Kanneh-Mason; soprano Julia Bullock; mezzo-soprano J’Nai Bridges; countertenor Iestyn Davies; bass-baritone Davóne Tines; and American Modern Opera Company.
