Public television’s Great Performances series will broadcast The Cleveland Orchestra Centennial Celebration on Friday, January 11 at 9 p.m. ET (check local listings). Conducted by Music Director Franz Welser-Möst, the concert commemorates the centennial of the orchestra’s founding and features works touching on more than a century of Viennese musical traditions. Pianist Lang Lang joins the orchestra for Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 24; other works on the program include Strauss’s Die Frau ohne Schatten Symphonic Fantasy and Ravel’s La Valse. This Great Performances episode also includes three segments produced by WVIZ/PBS ideastream providing historic looks at the Cleveland Orchestra: the first features “The Mother of The Cleveland Orchestra,” founder Adella Prentiss Hughes; the second segment highlights the orchestra’s seven music directors; and the final segment showcases the orchestra’s legacy of community engagement in Northeast Ohio neighborhoods and schools. Streams of the Cleveland Orchestra program will be available beginning January 12 on http://www.pbs.org/wnet/gperf/ and PBS apps.
