Maine’s Portland Symphony Orchestra has announced it will offer furloughed federal government employees up to five free tickets to its January 13 “Discovery Concert: Winter Wonderland.” Free tickets are available during the government shutdown to workers presenting a valid government ID at the box office beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 13, and on January 11 and 12 from noon to 6 p.m. The afternoon concert for families at Merrill Auditorium will feature guest conductor Aram Demirjian leading short selections by Strauss, Offenbach, Korngold, Herbert, Vivaldi, Grieg, Tchaikovsky, and Rimsky-Korsakov, and will be preceded by an instrument petting zoo and “Podium Hero” conducting lessons.
