“Next week, Greensboro Symphony Orchestra audiences will … hear a new concerto by classical and jazz composer and musician Chris Brubeck,” writes Dawn DeCwikiel-Kane in Thursday’s (1/17) News and Record (Greensboro, N.C.). “Violinist Jaime Laredo and cellist Sharon Robinson will solo with the orchestra on Brubeck’s ‘Pas de Deux: Concerto for Violin and Violoncello and Orchestra.’ The husband-and-wife duo will perform under the baton of Dmitry Sitkovetsky, the symphony’s music director…. The Greensboro Symphony was among five musical organizations to co-commission Brubeck to write the concerto for Laredo and Robinson…. The concerto made its world premiere in August, at the Classical Tahoe festival in Nevada…. Both composers and orchestras benefit when several orchestras join in a commission, Brubeck said. ‘Sometimes you can write a piece and the circumstances are just right for the piece and it gets played only once, which is really a shame because you put a lot of work into it,’ Brubeck said…. Orchestras also can share in the cost, he added. Next will come performances with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, the Pacific Symphony in Orange County, Calif., and at the UNC School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, from which Robinson graduated.”
