In January of 2009, the League of American Orchestras launched The Hub, a daily online overview of breaking news and insights about orchestras, classical music, and the changing cultural scene. Every week day, the editors of Symphony magazine create new content for The Hub, posting some 2,000 individual news items per year—and racking up a cumulative 20,000 articles over The Hub’s ten years.

The Hub has become the indispensable source of news and insights about the orchestra field, reporting on important media coverage of orchestras (Media View column), developments in the orchestra field (Industry Buzz), new personnel appointments (Who’s In), and the essential programs and services the League and its partner organizations provide (Help Yourself).

What was in the news during The Hub’s first days? In Georgia, the Savannah Philharmonic gave its first concert, succeeding the Savannah Symphony, which had folded in 2003. The Hub provided ongoing coverage of the financial challenges many orchestras faced during the Great Recession—and how they dealt with those challenges. In upstate New York, the Rochester Philharmonic helped its community by launching a local food drive in tandem with the League’s national Orchestras Feeding America food drive. The Houston Symphony opened its 2009-10 season with The Firebird and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4, with soloist Emanuel Ax, and the season included a world premiere by Kevin Puts, stellar new NASA footage to accompany The Planets, and an appearance by Lang Lang. And ten years later, in January of 2019, the Cleveland Orchestra features Lang Lang as a guest artist. Some things never change.
