The Austin Symphony Orchestra is in the midst of its annual High School Concert tour, traveling to five area schools in Texas for 45-minute side-by-side programs with band and orchestra students from participating schools. The full-orchestra tour began on January 28 at Austin High School, with visits continuing through February 4 at Covington Middle School Theater, McCallum High School, LBJ/LASA School, Manor High School, and Round Rock ISD. The tour is part of a semester-long thematic, interdisciplinary learning initiative around repertoire in the concerts, which this year includes music by Korngold, Boulanger, and Still, as well as the first movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, second movement of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10, the Main Title from John Williams’s Star Wars Suite for Orchestra, and part of Tchaikovsky’s March Slav. At the culmination of the project, students share original works based on the theme.
