“The Lubbock Symphony Orchestra’s winter chamber concert, scheduled for Tuesday, reflects a new concert format recently funded by a grant from the League of American Orchestras’ Futures Fund,” writes William Kerns in Monday’s (2/4) Lubbock Avalanche-Journal (Texas). “The concert … is sold out. Tuesday’s [Feb. 5] program now includes groundbreaking new music by living composers in a casual, creative environment…. The Lubbock Symphony Orchestra received a grant from the League of American Orchestras’ Futures Fund to develop this new concert series, which is designed to attract new audiences with primarily music for small ensembles composed within the last 30 years.” The American Orchestras’ Futures Fund is made possible by the Ann & Gordon Getty Foundation. Contemporary composers whose works were on the program are Michael Daugherty, Steve Reich, D.J. Sparr, and Anna Clyne. Also featured were scores by J.S. Bach, Fauré, Scarlatti, Handel, and George Walker. “Galen Wixson, LSO president and CEO, said, ‘We set out to re-imagine and curate a groundbreaking chamber program that both showcases local and national talent, and emphasizes all the great, exciting music being written today. For example, many of these composers are living and making music today. One, D.J Sparr, actually is a local composer and Texas Tech School of Music instructor.”
