“American-Israeli conductor Steven Sloane is the new music director designate of the Jerusalem Symphony, taking the full job in 2020/21 when he succeeds Frédéric Chaslin,” writes Nicholas Beard in Wednesday’s (2/13) MusicalAmerica.com (subscription required). “In September, Sloane, 60, was named principal guest conductor and artistic advisor of Sweden’s Malmö Opera…. He has been general music director of the Bochum Symphony Orchestra [in Germany] for the last 25 years and is credited with the planning and construction of the new concert hall, the Anneliese Brost Musikforum Ruhr, which opened in October 2016. In his comments about the Jerusalem Symphony appointment he emphasizes collaborating with other institutions and building new audiences, particularly of young people. Sloane is Professor of Conducting at Berlin’s University of the Arts, where he established the International Conducting Academy Berlin, and has guest conducted the major orchestras of London, San Francisco, Chicago, Frankfurt, and Sydney, among others. Opera credits include London, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and the Deutsche Oper Berlin.”
