“The Florentine Opera has named Maggey Oplinger as its new General Director effective March 1, making her the first female leader of a company that’s celebrating its 85th season,” writes Jim Higgins in Thursday’s (2/21) Journal Sentinel (Milwaukee). “Oplinger brings experience as both a singer and an administrator. She has been both director of community partnerships and director of shared experiences at the Milwaukee Symphony, where her missions included increasing the symphony’s local footprint in economically feasible ways. She has also worked for Johnson Controls as an innovation catalyst and sales proposal team lead…. Oplinger succeeds William Florescu, who resigned abruptly in May 2018. The Florentine board later disclosed that Florescu’s departure was related to ‘violation of the Florentine Opera’s policies and prohibitions concerning sexual misconduct.’ A Washington Post report on sexual harassment in the classical music world included a 2008 incident involving the former general director of Milwaukee’s Florentine Opera.”
