“The board of directors of the Savannah Philharmonic announced it has accepted Peter Shannon’s resignation as the artistic director and conductor of the organization, effective Feb. 27,” reads an unsigned article in Monday’s (3/4) Savannah Morning News (GA). “The Philharmonic announced in November that Shannon was stepping down, but he was expected to stay until the end of the 10th season. The Philharmonic announced his immediate departure on Monday. Rhegan White-Clemm, chairperson of the SPO board, said the 10th anniversary season will continue as planned, including all scheduled concerts and special events, as well as all educational and community outreach programs. Guest conductors for the two remaining orchestral concerts will be announced shortly…. For the remainder of the season, audiences can look forward to a robust repertoire, including the orchestra’s anticipated collaboration with the Savannah Music Festival on April 6, according to the Philharmonic…. On April 27, the Philharmonic Chorus will feature the musical settings of the poetry of Walt Whitman and Robert Frost… The season will culminate May 4 with a performance of Mahler’s momentous Symphony #2 in C-minor, ‘Resurrection.’ ” No further details were available about Shannon’s departure.
