“On Sunday, the Cleveland Orchestra announced the details of its 2019-20 season, and the news is great for advocates of modern and contemporary music,” writes Zachary Lewis in Sunday’s (3/10) Plain Dealer (Cleveland). “The orchestra will present dozens of new and rare works, including several local, U.S., and world premieres. Also on tap: a concert performance of Berg’s opera ‘Lulu.’ … Expect to hear commissions by Oded Zehavi and Young Composer Fellow Bernd Richard Deutsch as well as new or recent work by Olga Neuwirth, John Adams, Thomas Ades, Louis Andriessen, John Harbison, Michael Tilson Thomas and the late Oliver Knussen. One program includes Symphony No. 4 by Florence Price…. Next spring, music director Franz Welser-Möst will preside over a modern festival. In collaboration with the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Cleveland Public Library and the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque, he and the orchestra will consider Berg’s opera ‘Lulu’ and other music and art once labeled ‘degenerate,’ including Antheil’s ‘Ballet mecanique,’ Schulhoff’s Symphony No. 5 and Still’s Poem for Orchestra (a 1944 Cleveland Orchestra commission)…. Major works by Mahler, Bruckner, Brahms, Berlioz, Sibelius, Mozart, Dvořák and others are all in the mix [plus] lesser-known symphonies of Schubert and Prokofiev.”
