“The Hartford Symphony Orchestra gets a workout next season, with guest performers that include a percussion ensemble and a saxophone quartet,” writes Christopher Arnott in Sunday’s (3/17) Hartford Courant (CT). “The HSO’s 2019-20 ‘Masterworks’ season, announced Monday by Music Director Carolyn Kuan and its executive director Steve Collins, spans several centuries of classical music—from 18th-century icon Vivaldi and 19th-century superstars Beethoven and Brahms—to … Gershwin and Copland and living legends Christopher Theofanidis, Anna Clyne and Philip Glass… The Nov. 15 to 17 concert contains Johannes Brahms’ ‘Variations on a Theme of Haydn,’ [Haydn’s] Symphony No. 103, known as ‘The Drumroll’—and a more modern drum-themed piece, Theofanidis’ ‘Drum Circles’ [performed by] Robert van Sice’s The Percussion Collective…. The 2019-20 season ends … with … Philip Glass’ wailing 1995 ‘Concerto for Saxophone Quartet and Orchestra’ … featuring the Hartford-based Resurgam saxophone quartet.
