“Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops will feature John Williams’ movie music in its first set Saturday night at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts” during its five-city tour of Texas March 20-24, writes Chris Gray in Wednesday’s (3/20) San Antonio Express-News (TX). “Lockhart succeeded Williams as the principal conductor of the Boston Pops in 1995…. ‘The amazing thing about John’s music is it enhances the film without overwhelming it …,’ [Lockhart says]…. Lockhart was only 35 when he took over for Williams, who retains the title of Conductor Laureate.… The tour that brings Lockhart and the Pops to the Tobin Center … is supporting their 2017 recording ‘Lights, Camera … Music! Six Decades of John Williams.’ … The orchestra’s recently announced spring season will feature guest appearances by Broadway queen Bernadette Peters, Americana songstress Rhiannon Giddens in a program called ‘Redefining American Music,’ and ‘Hamilton’ star Leslie Odom Jr. ‘Basically, I tell people the Boston Pops is “orchestra for people who don’t know that they like orchestras,” ‘ Lockhart says. ‘Our repertoire is certainly centered in the great classical orchestral repertoire, but we go in so many different directions beyond that.’ ”
