MARSHALL HUGHES has been appointed program manager for New England Conservatory’s Bridge to Equity and Achievement in Music (BEAM) initiative. BEAM’s mission is to prepare young musicians from underrepresented populations for careers in classical music. BEAM was launched in September 2018 with a $2.5 million grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to New England Conservatory of Music, in consortium with the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras, the Community Music Center of Boston, Project STEP, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. At BEAM, Hughes will oversee the daily management of the program and individual curricula for each student musician. Hughes is founder and director of Boston-based opera company Opera unMet. He conducted SANS, an international choral exchange choir, for over fifteen years, leading international tours. He has performed in Europe and the United States, and directed theater productions at Emerson College, New England Conservatory, and Wheelock College. He has been on the faculties of MIT, Wheelock, Roxbury Community College, and Emmanuel College. The first BEAM students will begin in fall of 2019.
