The Las Vegas Philharmonic will open its 2019-20 season on September 7 with Anna Clyne’s Masquerade, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D Major with soloist Francesca Dego, and Mussorgsky/Ravel’s Pictures at an Exhibition, led by Music Director Donato Cabrera. In October, Cabrera will present “A Very Vegas Showcase,” featuring music of the Rat Pack as well as works by local composers and performers. The event is described as building on Keith Thompson’s monthly Composer’s Showcase at Myron’s Cabaret Jazz at the Smith Center for the Performing Arts, whose resident companies include the Las Vegas Philharmonic and Nevada Ballet Theatre. An April program entitled “Kurt Weill’s America,” with the orchestra joined by soprano soloist Lisa Vroman, will include the Seven Deadly Sins, Four Walt Whitman Songs, and “Mack the Knife” from The Threepenny Opera. Also planned during the season are Handel’s Messiah, a program of film music by Danny Elfman, and music by Beethoven, Brahms, Britten, Dvořák, Mozart, Smetana, and Vivaldi. The season will conclude in May with Gabriela Lena Frank’s Three Latin American Dances, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, and Richard Strauss’s Four Last Songs, featuring soprano Josefin Feiler.
