Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra will tour seven European cities from May 12 to 26 as part of the orchestra’s 50th-anniversary celebrations. The tour will begin with concerts in London and Cambridge, where Music Director Alexander Shelley will conduct Ana Sokolovic’s Golden slumbers kiss your eyes… with countertenor D.Q. Lee and London Voices, Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G with piano soloist Jan Lisiecki, and Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 (“From the New World”). In addition to the Sokolovic piece, the tour will feature contemporary works by Canadian composers Claude Vivier, Zosha Di Castri, Jocelyn Morlock, Nicole Lizée, and John Estacio. The tour will include performances in Paris, Utrecht, Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Gothenburg, with collaborative events in each city. In Paris, the orchestra will partner with students from Université Paris 3–Sorbonne Nouvelle to prepare performances for elementary students at La Seine Musicale, the performing arts center on the Île Seguin on the Seine river. In Utrecht, an orchestra of international refugees and Dutch musicians will perform with five musicians from the NAC Orchestra in the city’s Overvecht district, and Syrian refugee children will create and perform a piece with the NAC Ambassador Brass Trio as part of a community concert.
