The Virginia Beach-based orchestra Symphonicity will perform a May 5 program at the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts entitled “Destination: Virginia,” featuring the world premiere of Cherut! A Freedom Fanfare by Music Director Daniel W. Boothe. Cherut! incorporates musical motifs that reference Virginia history as well as patriotic and folk music. Also on the program will be Virginia composer Mark Camphouse’s Resolutions, which commemorates the 275th anniversary of the city of Fairfax; Debussy’s La Mer, featuring regional photography by Lyle Eesley; and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with pianist Michael Davidman. Before the concert, Multi-Celli, a group of cellists from Virginia Beach City public schools, grades 6-12, will perform, led by Mary Hughes, Symphonicity’s principal cello. At a free event on the day of the concert, the orchestra has invited the public to join them and Virginia Beach Mayor Bobby Dyer in the concert hall lobby as they make a music video performing Virginia’s new state song, “Our Great Virginia.”
