“Grammy-nominated jazz violinist Regina Carter will perform with the Chicago Sinfonietta during its final concert of the season, ‘SoundSketch: Portraits in Rhythm, Blues and Beyond,’ ” writes Kathy Cichon in Tuesday’s (5/7) Naperville Sun (IL). “Conducted by Maestro Mei-Ann Chen and featuring guest conductor Paola Avila, the Sinfonietta will perform Jessie Montgomery’s ‘Strum’ and Edward Elgar’s ‘Enigma Variations.’ … The majority of the program though, is David Schiff’s ‘4 Sisters,’ featuring guest soloist Carter. She performed the work at its 2004 U.S. premiere with the Detroit Symphony. ‘I’m excited to perform the piece again…. David Schiff … definitely understands jazz,’ said Carter.… The approximately 35-minute work is a tribute to Aretha Franklin, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan. ‘In each of those movements, you’ll hear a quote or line, whether it’s in the solo part or orchestra—or a groove that would be reminiscent of each of those vocalists,’ Carter said…. Carter was just 4 years old when she began studying violin. It wasn’t until she was a teenager though that she knew she wanted to be a jazz musician… It was the idea of being able to play a song and interpret it that attracted her to genre.”
