MUSIC CentriCITY is the theme of the League of American Orchestras’ National Conference this June in Nashville—and a compelling musical experience from composer Hannibal Lokumbe will be a Conference centerpiece. On Tuesday, June 4 at 5:30 p.m., Lokumbe’s Crucifixion Resurrection: Nine Souls a-Traveling—which honors the victims of the 2015 mass shooting at Charleston’s Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church—will be performed in a free concert at Nashville’s Downtown Presbyterian Church. The work, scored for jazz ensemble, chorus, narrators, and vocal soloists, will be performed by Intersection Contemporary Music Ensemble, with Artistic Director Kelly Corcoran conducting.
The concert will be preceded by a silent “Walk of Love”—which Lokumbe envisions as an integral part of Crucifixion Resurrection. League Conference delegates are invited to convene at 5:00 p.m. in the lobby of the Omni Hotel with Nashville community members to participate in the walk to Downtown Presbyterian Church. Participants will hold banners commemorating the victims; the twelve-minute reflective experience will serve as a prequel to the work.
