On May 26, all 250 young musicians who make up the three ensembles of California’s Youth Orchestras of Fresno—plus another 40 players from the organization’s free Access Violin Program—will perform a free concert at Saroyan Theatre in Fresno. Violinist Richard Lin, the 2018 gold-medal winner of the Indianapolis Violin Competition, will perform the Khachaturian violin concerto with the orchestra. Also on the program will be Mariachitlán by Mexican composer Juan Pablo Contreras, who was recently named the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra’s 2019-20 Sound Investment Composer; Gershwin’s Cuban Overture; and the Danzas from Ginastera’s Estancia, the latter performed by all musicians present. Thomas Loewenheim is music director of the Youth Orchestras of Fresno; he also conducts the Fresno State Symphony Orchestra and is artistic director of the FOOSA Festival/Fresno Summer Orchestra Academy.
