“The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra on Tuesday announced details for its 25th European tour this fall, which will span five countries and include 11 concerts in 10 cities in total,” writes Jeremy Reynolds in Wednesday’s (5/29) Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “The tour, which stretches from Oct. 25 in Frankfurt, Germany, to Nov. 8 in Dusseldorf, Germany, includes several first-time visits for the orchestra, including the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Germany, the Philharmonie de Paris in Paris and the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. The symphony will also visit Austria, Belgium, France and the Netherlands. Music director Manfred Honeck will lead the orchestra in repertoire ranging from Mozart, Shostakovich and Bruckner to Mason Bates and James MacMillan. Guest soloists include pianists Lang Lang and Igor Levit as well as baritone Matthias Goerne.… The orchestra’s first international performance took place in 1947 in Mexico. It has since performed in halls in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, Puerto Rico and South America. In 2020, the PSO will celebrate its 125th anniversary season.”
