The American Composers Orchestra, based in New York City, has announced commissions for three emerging composers: Jack Hughes, Jihyun Kim, and Aaron Israel Levin. They were chosen from the six participants in ACO’s 28th Underwood New Music Readings on May 23-24 at New York University, during which the ACO performed Hughes’s Needlepoint, Kim’s A Tramp in the Assembly Line, and Levin’s In Between. Hughes, winner of the 2019 Underwood Commission, will receive have a work premiered by ACO in a future season. Kim received the new Consortium for Emerging Composers Commission; Kim’s commission will be performed by ACO as well as the Alabama Symphony Orchestra and American Youth Symphony in Los Angeles, where Carlos Izcaray as music director. Levin, recipient of this year’s Audience Choice Commission, will also have a composition premiered by ACO in a future season. This year’s Underwood New Music Readings were led by ACO’s Artistic Director, composer Derek Bermel, and were conducted by Ludovic Morlot, with Bermel, Anthony Cheung, and Tania León as mentor composers. In addition to Hughes, Levin, and Kim, the 2019 Underwood New Music Readings participants were Rodrigo A. Castro, Chen Yihan, and inti figgis-vizueta.
