“The National Arts Centre is cancelling its two-decades-old summer training program for young musicians,” writes Peter Hum in Saturday’s (6/15) Ottawa Citizen (Canada). “Founded by former NAC Orchestra music director Pinchas Zukerman, the Young Artists Program has helped educate hundreds of instrumentalists and vocalists from around the world since it was launched in 1999. Some of the program’s alumni went on to join NACO. This year’s program, which provided lessons, master classes, chamber music coaching, lectures, concert opportunities and mentoring, began June 3 and ends June 22…. In a statement, Geneviève Cimon, the NAC’s director of music education and community engagement, said, … ‘We have decided to re-orient our artist training programs in music to be more focused on orchestral training…. We remain committed to artist training at the highest level and will take the next year to develop a unique orchestral training program that draws on the strengths the musicians of the NAC Orchestra have to offer.’ The NAC will continue to collaborate with Zukerman, its music director emeritus and the training program’s artistic director, Cimon said. The training program received funding from individual donors, corporations and the NAC’s National Youth and Education Trust.”
