“The long-time music director for the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra plans to retire,” reads an unsigned Friday (6/28) report at radio station WITF (Harrisburg, PA). “Stephen Gunzenhauser, 77, said he will step down as symphony conductor and music director next June. He was appointed in 1979. The symphony said his upcoming, final season will include works ranging from the romantic to the epic and feature distinguished guest artists. Gunzenhauser has conducted all over the world, including with the National Orchestra of Argentina and the Berlin Symphony Orchestra … and his recordings have sold more than two million copies. Gunzenhauser plans to stay involved with the Endless Mountain Music Festival, an international festival with venues in Pennsylvania and New York.”
