From July 22 to 24, the Music Academy of the West, in Santa Barbara, California, will present the Classical Evolution/Revolution Conference, at which artists, composers, arts executives, and media leaders will cover topics including how best to serve the needs of today’s evolving audiences, navigating the world of commercial music, and taking control of one’s own creative life and career. Now expanded from one day to three, the 2019 conference also features the first Fast Pitch Awards, where the Academy’s young musicians will propose innovations in classical performance, presentation, and audience development. The conference, which is open to the public, Academy faculty and fellows, and industry professionals, features guest panelists and speakers including pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard; composer Jeff Beal; Clemency Burton-Hill, creative director of music and arts at classical station WQXR; Clive Chang, director of strategy and business development at Disney Theatrical Group; flutist Claire Chase, co-founder of International Contemporary Ensemble; David Devan, president and CEO of Opera Philadelphia; and Deborah Rutter, president of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
