Essentials of Orchestra Management, the League of American Orchestras’ seminar for preparing early-career orchestra professionals to be effective and innovative administrators and leaders, runs from July 8-18 in Los Angeles at the University of Southern California campus. The 35 participants in the 2019 Essentials of Orchestra Management seminar come from orchestras and musical organizations of all sizes across the country; their current positions include executive director, musician, director of development, education manager, publicist, and more. Led by a faculty of orchestra executives, leadership experts, artists, and arts activists, the ten-day Essentials course explores the challenges faced by orchestra managers today and envisions how orchestras must adapt to be sustainable in the future. Essentials addresses theory and practice in a curriculum that integrates the faculty’s practical experience and professional knowledge into a course designed to elevate participants’ careers. Since Essentials’ inception in 2000, over 500 individuals have participated in the program; many are now professionals at organizations including El Sistema USA, National Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Silkroad, and more. Essentials of Orchestra Management is made possible by generous grants from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.
