In Columbia, Missouri, the tenth annual Mizzou International Composers Festival will take place from July 22 to 27 on the University of Missouri campus and nearby venues. The festival will feature eight world premieres performed by the ensemble Alarm Will Sound at the Missouri Theatre. The premieres by this year’s resident composers are Theo Chandler (Familiar Punchlines), inti figgis-vizueta (braiding on golden stoops), Charles Halka (Fever Dream), Chelsea Komschlies (Hexactinellida), Aaron Mencher (Haworthia), Nicole Murphy (Dust), Peter Shin (dogwhistling), and Kristina Wolfe (A Curation of Finds). Donnacha Dennehy and Mary Beth Kirsten will be among the festival’s guest composers, and there will be composer presentations, open rehearsals, an audio installation in the Missouri Theatre’s second-floor lobby, and pop-up concerts at Sparky’s Homemade Ice Cream, Uprise Bakery, and Café Berlin. The Mizzou International Composers Festival is part of the Mizzou New Music Initiative, an array of programs aimed at positioning the University of Missouri School of Music as a center of composition and new music.
