The New York Youth Symphony (NYYS) has announced the election of WILLIAM A. KAPELL as president of the board of trustees. Kapell has served on the board since 2014, where he chaired the Board Development Committee and co-chaired the Strategic Planning Committee. As president, he follows Melissa Eisenstat, who will continue to serve on the board. The board also elected three new trustees: Siqi Mou, Sabine Nicoleau, and Robert Yunich. Kapell’s professional background includes 25 years as a commercial litigator. He also served as lead counsel for Children’s Rights, Inc., which seeks to improve the conditions of children in state foster care. Kapell studied classical piano for thirteen years and also plays ragtime piano. Kapell’s uncle was a concert pianist, his oldest sister and niece are professional flutists, his mother still plays and studies piano at the age of 92, his daughter studied double bass at Juilliard as a member of the Juilliard-Columbia University joint program, and his son is a guitar player. Kapell’s father was a former NYYS trustee, and his sister and daughter are past members of the NYYS Orchestra.
