During the 2019-20 season, California’s San José Chamber Orchestra will perform in seven San José-area venues, following the sale of the Trianon Theatre, where the orchestra has traditionally performed most of its concerts. Music Director Barbara Day Turner will conduct concerts at Santa Clara University Recital Hall and Mission Santa Clara in Santa Clara; the California Theatre, San José City Hall Rotunda, and 3Below Theaters and Lounge in San Jose; First United Methodist Church in Palo Alto; and McAfee Performing Arts Center in Saratoga. “Moving from our ‘home’ at the Trianon will be challenging,” says Turner. “We look at this as an opportunity to reach out to new audiences as we will be performing at venues in San José, Santa Clara, Saratoga and Palo Alto.” The San José Chamber Orchestra, founded in 1991, performs between seven and nine programs per season, many featuring commissions or world premieres. Among contemporary composers represented in 2019-20 are Clarice Assad, Durwynne Hsieh, Joel Friedman, and Judith Shatin.
