“Alexander Neef, currently general director of Canadian Opera Company and artistic director of Santa Fe Opera, was named today as the next general director of the Opéra National de Paris,” reads an unsigned Wednesday (7/24) Opera News article. “Neef’s designation … is technically a presidential appointment and thus overseen by Emmanuel Macron. Neef’s appointment was officially announced in Paris at a meeting of the French cabinet. Neef is slated to commence his tenure at Paris Opera beginning with the company’s 2021-22 season, and he will succeed Stéphane Lissner.… Neef became Canadian Opera Company’s general director in 2008 [and will] depart the Toronto company following its 2020-21 season. His tenure at Canada’s largest opera company has been notable for drawing a number of high-profile singers, conductors and production teams…. Neef has also notably increased the profile … of the company’s  … young artist program. Santa Fe Opera has yet to announce whether Neef will remain in the post of artistic director, a role that he assumed in October of last year. Neef, 45, previously served as casting director at the Paris Opera from 2004 through 2008, where he worked during the term of former general director Gerard Mortier.”
