The Juilliard School has announced its 2019-20 contemporary-music season featuring the school’s AXIOM ensemble, conducted by Jeffrey Milarsky, and the New Juilliard Ensemble, conducted by Joel Sachs. The theme of the New Juilliard Ensemble’s annual Focus festival will be “Trailblazers: Pioneering Women Composers of the 20th Century.” The January 20-31 festival, co-curated by Odaline de la Martinez and Sachs, will mark the centennial of women’s suffrage and celebrate groundbreaking female composers, including Sofia Gubaidulina, Thea Musgrave, Betsy Jolas, and Jacqueline Fontyn, all born in the 1920s and 1930s and still actively composing. An April 13 program by the New Juilliard Ensemble at Alice Tully Hall will feature world premieres by Evan Anderson, Marc Migó Cortés, Diana Syrse, Xiaogang Ye, and Chen Yao. Milarsky will conduct AXIOM programs on November 1, November 23, and February 27 featuring masterworks of the 20th and 21st centuries, with composers to include Harrison Birtwistle, Igor Stravinsky, Toru Takemitsu, Elliott Carter, George Lewis, Morton Feldman, Philip Glass, Melinda Wagner, Pierre Boulez, and Thomas Adès.
