The California Symphony Orchestra has ratified a new five-year collective bargaining agreement with its musicians, effective through July 31, 2023. The contract, announced jointly by the orchestra and the Musicians Union Local 6 of the American Federation of Musicians, includes a 12 percent increase in salary over the contract term, and the 2019-20 season will include additional services for the musicians. The orchestra noted that it has increased the operating budget by 50% and held a balanced or surplus budget for four out of five years. Donato Cabrera is the California Symphony’s music director, and Bill Armstrong is board president. As previously announced, Aubrey Bergauer will step down as executive director on August 15; a national search for her successor is underway. Said Bergauer, “Knowing a change in executive leadership is coming, I’m proud of the entire team of musicians and staff who made this negotiation a positive, thoughtful, forward-looking process.”
