“The Annapolis Symphony Orchestra is in the hunt for new leadership with the announcement Wednesday that Executive Director Patrick Nugent is moving on next month,” writes E.B. Furgurson III in Wednesday’s (8/21) Capital Gazette (Annapolis, MD). “Nugent is set to become vice-president for individual and organizational giving at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. [Since] he came on board in 2015, Nugent led a transformation of the organization both financially and artistically…. The symphony, which consists of 70 professional musicians led by Music Director José-Luis Novo, performs at Maryland Hall [and] also provides educational programs through its partnerships with local schools…. The symphony and the Musicians’ Association of Metropolitan Baltimore recently finalized a new contract [that] included a 3% increase in base pay annually over the life of the contract, and a process for hiring musicians as faculty in the Annapolis Symphony Academy, which just finished its first year with 50 students…. That effort is among others to reach out to youth in the community.” Said Board Chair Jane Casey, “Compared to four years ago, the symphony is on a much firmer foundation both financially and artistically.”
