The Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Latino Alliance and African American Network, both established in the past five years with the goal of creating connections through music, have announced details of their 2019-20 seasons. The Latino Alliance will hold its first event on September 5 at Symphony Center, a screening of the 1935 film Redes, with a score by Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas. There will be a pre-concert reception and performances by Mariachi Herencia de Mexico and members of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, along with a Q&A with Angel Gil-Ordóñez, who conducted the PostClassical Ensemble in the score for the film’s DVD release. Additional Latino Alliance events are planned for October 17, December 14, and April 25, 2020. The first 2019-20 African American Network event, on October 25, will feature Bridge Over Muddied Waters, an original concert work created and performed by African American mezzo-soprano Cynthia Clarey and concert artist Beckie Menzie. On February 29, the Network’s celebration of Black History Month will feature the world premiere of a live film score by African American composer, conductor, violist Renée Baker, focusing on Josephine Baker in the 1927 film Siren of the Tropics. Performers will include members of the Chicago Modern Orchestra Project, the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, and Tsukasa Taiko.
