This year, the Houston Symphony’s annual free Fiesta Sinfónica concert celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month will highlight music of Cuba, and take place on September 15 at Jones Hall. The program will feature Mexican soprano Yunuet Laguna and will be conducted by Jacomo Bairos, music director of the Amarillo Symphony and artistic director of Miami’s Nu Deco Ensemble. In addition to Gershwin’s Cuban Overture, the program will also include dance-inspired works by Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona (1895-1963). Laguna, who recently joined the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, will perform “¿Que te importa que no venga?” from José Serrano’s zarzuela Los Claveles and “Depuis le jour” from Gustave Charpentier’s Louise.
