“A gift of $4 million from the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation will enable the Interlochen Center for the Arts to complete a versatile residential facility—the final element of its 1990 master site plan,” writes Taylor Grant in Wednesday’s (9/11) Musical America (subscription required). “Since the 1930s succeeding generations of the Dow family have provided both funding and professional expertise in developing and realizing master plans for Interlochen…. The $8.5m facility … includes two wings. One will provide housing for 60 students during the academic year and apartments for camp faculty during the summer. The other wing will provide temporary quarters for visiting artists and performers throughout the year…. The master site plan … has also included construction of the Phoenix Theater, Harvey Theater … Aaron and Helen L. DeRoy Center for Film Studies … the Music Center, and the upcoming Dance Building renovation and expansion. The Dow’s most recent gift, says [Interlochen President Trey Devey], ‘marks a turning point … as we shift our focus toward making an Interlochen education accessible … helping us attract a diverse student body.’ Once completed… ICA’s facilities ‘[will be] representative of a world leader and convener of the arts.’ ”
