Astral in Concert, the public programming arm of the Astral Artists mentoring program for young professional musicians, will open its 2019-20 season of performances in Philadelphia’s Center City with a free September 14 block party in Midtown Village. The event, emceed by WRTI radio host Debra Lew Harder, will feature picnic fare and family activities as well as performances by Astral roster artists Zlatomir Fung, cello; Rachel Lee Hall, harp; Beomjae Kim, flute; and Brittany Lasch, trombone. The Astral concert season will feature masterworks, rarely heard chamber music, and new works from its Micro-Commissioning Program. The concluding concert of the season in May, titled Musical Roots, will combine chamber music, improvisation, and multimedia, with works built around folk and popular music interpreted by composers including Missy Mazzoli, Daniel Bernard Roumain, Jennifer Higdon, and Dan Visconti. In addition to the Center City concerts, Astral also presents concerts at the Dizengoff and Abe Fisher restaurants and an Astral Circle series of salon concerts in homes and other venues in and around the city.
